Dear Glenvar High Students and Parents,

Welcome back Highlanders!  I hope you have had a great summer and are looking forward to an exciting school year.  I am very excited to have the honor of serving as your Principal. I look forward to building relationships with you, as well as working with teachers and staff to provide a world-class educational experience.

Our Business Day will be July 31, 2018 from 12:00 pm -7:00 pm in the office lobby.  On August 9th, we will have a Freshmen and New Students to GHS Orientation in the GHS Auditorium from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm. We are excited to welcome our new students entering Glenvar High School and for them to learn about what it means to be a Highlander.  Back-to-School Night will be the same evening, August 9th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  All students and parents will have an opportunity to visit their classes, meet their teachers, and find their locker.   We invite families to come anytime within the 2-hour window and move through the building at your own pace.

Charges and dues for the school year are as follows:

    1. Laptops will be made available for all students during school hours. Students in grades 9–12 have the option to take the laptops home on a daily basis by paying a $50.00 laptop charge.  Students who have been approved for free or reduced lunch will pay a $25.00 laptop charge.  Students are responsible for all work assigned by a teacher that requires the use of a computer.
    1. Students will be asked to pay the following class dues:
12th Grade - $20.00 (seniors will buy their caps and gowns directly from Herff Jones)
      11th Grade - $10.00
      10th Grade - $10.00
      9th Grade -   $10.00
*All dues cover homecoming decorations in the school during spirit week. All remaining monies are rolled to the student’s senior year and are used to cover the expenses of the senior activities that are provided to all seniors.
    1. Students who choose to drive to school will need to obtain a parking permit for $40.00.  The application is available on our website or in our main office.
    1. All students taking physical education courses will be required to wear school appropriate athletic attire.  (No buttons, large zippers, belts or buckles).  Gym suits are available at a cost of $13.00 ($4.00 for t-shirt and $9.00 for mesh shorts).
    1. The meal prices for the upcoming school year are as follows:

      2018-2019 Breakfast Prices
      Full . . . . . . . . .  $1.35
      Reduced . . . . .  $ .30

      2018 – 2019 Lunch Prices
      Full . . . . . . . . .  $2.80
      Reduced . . . . .  $ .40

Another option for parents is to make online payments at www.myschoolbucks.com using a credit or debit card.  The MSB School Store for student fees is up and running, however the MSB Lunch Store will remain closed until approximately August 2nd so parents do not have unexpected automatic drafts.  If you are already using MySchoolBucks to pay for school meals, your account is already set-up. Just login and click in the link to Store. If you do not have an account, just go to the website and register.

You are encouraged to visit Glenvar High School during the month of August or pay online starting July 31st.  This will allow you to receive your schedule prior to the start of school.  The forms you need can be found on the GHS website.  Students will NOT receive a schedule if any outstanding charges have not been paid or if items have not been returned.  Please do not hesitate to contact me or the school at 540-387-6536 if you have any questions.

Again, welcome Highlander families and enjoy the rest of your summer!

    Sincerely,

    Corie Franklin
    Principal

  • We remind parents that first day of school forms should be completed online. To get started, go online to the Roanoke County Public Schools website at https://www.rcs.k12.va.us/Page/356.

Parents should receive a letter in the mail in mid July with instructions on how to access the system for their children.  The letter will contain a link and instructions as well as a secure “snapcode” that links directly to their child’s information.  Parents must have the snapcode before starting to complete first day of school forms.

Parents of returning students can use their existing account or can create a new secure account that they will use each year for student first day forms.  To make the process easier for families with multiple students, parents will have the ability to copy all generic family information to all other students in their family without having to re-enter that information for each student.

Parents are asked to complete their online forms by Wednesday, August 8.  Paper forms will be available upon request at their child’s school.

We look forward to seeing our students back in class on August 13 and we hope you enjoy the rest of the summer break!
