The Carver Project
Experience Roanoke County and Salem's black history through The Carver Project
The Carver Project is about the Carver Consolidated School that was located in Salem, Virginia during segregation. From 1940-1966, it served African-American children from all parts of Roanoke County and beyond in grades 1-12 under one roof.
This 66-minute long documentary is designed to preserve the rich history and traditions that made the school so special to so many. It also highlights many of the larger-than-life personalities that roamed the halls and classrooms during that era.
The documentary features 25 different interviews from former students, teachers and parents along with hundreds of photos from that era. The documentary was produced by the City of Salem Communications Department as a joint venture between the City of Salem, Virginia and the Salem School Division. We thank you for taking the time to learn about this important part of our heritage and we thank the City of Salem for allowing us to share this important documentary on this page.
