Overview

What RCPSOnline Academy is — and isn't

RCPSOnline Academy is Roanoke County Public Schools' own online learning program, not a third-party provider. Students remain enrolled at their home school while taking one or more courses online - or fully online, on a schedule that's more flexible than a traditional class period but still anchored to real deadlines, real teachers, and real feedback.

It's a strong fit for students who want to get ahead, take an elective that doesn't fit into their in-person schedule, or learn at their own pace. It is not a self-taught, hands-off program — students check in weekly and are expected to meet the same academic standards as any RCPS classroom.

Function, design & expectations

How an online course actually runs

FUNCTION

How courses are delivered

Each course lives in the district's learning management system. Students complete readings, videos, and assignments online and submit work directly to their teacher — no in-person seat time required.

DESIGN

How a course is structured

Courses are broken into weekly units, with all the week's work — quizzes, tests, assignments, or discussions — due Sunday evening. This keeps pacing consistent even though the schedule is somewhat flexible.

EXPECTATIONS

What's expected of students

Plan for 5–7 hours of coursework per week per class, a weekly check-in with your teacher, and firm unit deadlines — flexible pacing isn't the same as no pacing.

A typical course week

Every RCPSOnline course follows the same basic rhythm, so switching between subjects never feels disorienting.

Policy

Academic integrity, plainly stated

  • Work must be your own.Assignments, quizzes, and discussion posts are submitted individually. Coursework copied from another student, a website, or an AI tool without attribution is a violation.
  • Assessments are monitored.Tests and major assignments may use plagiarism detection and, for some courses, proctoring — the same standard as an in-person RCPS classroom.
  • Violations follow the same process as in-person courses. An integrity concern is handled by the course teacher and the student's home school under the district's existing academic integrity policy.
  • Questions go to your teacher first. If you're ever unsure whether something counts as collaboration or a violation, ask before you submit — not after.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who can enroll in RCPSOnline Academy?

Any RCPS student in grades 9–12 in good standing with their home school counselor's approval. Enrollment is coordinated through your school, not directly through the Academy.

Can I take an online course alongside my regular schedule?

Yes — most students take one or two online courses as part of their regular schedule, though full-time enrollment is available for specific circumstances. Talk to your counselor about what fits your schedule.

Is RCPSOnline Academy self-paced?

It's flexible, not self-paced without limits. You choose when during the week you do the work, but weekly checkpoints and unit deadlines are fixed by the teacher.

Do online courses count toward my GPA and graduation requirements?

Yes. Academy courses are fully accredited by the state and taught by licensed RCPS teachers. All Academy courses count the same as an in-person course toward GPA, credit, and graduation requirements.

What does it cost?

Cost depends on how you're using the Academy:

  • Enrolling full-time as an Academy student — no cost, as long as you enroll during the official registration period.
  • Taking up to two online courses as part of your regular course load — no cost, as long as they're requested before the end of the prior school year.
  • Adding an online course beyond your regular course load — $400.
  • Swapping a face-to-face course for an online one after the prior school year ends, up until fall classes start — $400.

Newly enrolled students aren't held to the prior-school-year deadline for the no-cost options above.

How do I enroll?

Start with your school counselor, who can confirm eligibility and submit your enrollment request for the upcoming window.
