BCAT Engineering team - Virginia Samsung Solve for Tomorrow winners

The BCAT Center for Engineering at the Burton Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT) in Salem has been named the Virginia State Winner in the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national STEM competition.  The Center also recently won the Altec Innovation Challenge.

2025 spelling bee winner and runner up

On January 28, 2025, Rory Grant, a seventh-grade student at William Byrd Middle School, claimed victory in the 2025 Roanoke County Spelling Bee, successfully spelling the challenging word “ruching.”  This is Grant's second victory at the annual county spelling bee.

Green Valley Elementary's Cardinal Academy Excels at National Robotics Competition

Green Valley Elementary School’s Cardinal Academy made waves at the Robot Drone League’s National Junior Division Competition held on January 25, 2025 at East Tennessee State University. Competing for the first time on a national stage, the students showcased exceptional skill, innovation, and teamwork against teams from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Roanoke County School Board

The Roanoke County School Board has selected Cave Spring District member Shelley Clemons as the chairman of the board for 2025.  Catawba District Member Brent Hudson was selected as vice-chairman.
