Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

The 2024 YRBS will be administered online at your child’s school between February 13-16, 2024 and student participation is voluntary. The YRBS survey is available for parental review (please see the survey examples on this page).  If you do not want your child to participate in the YRBS, please complete the YRBS Survey Opt-out form by no later than February 1, 2024.

If you have any questions, please contact the LIFE counselor or administration at your child’s school.

About the Youth Risk Behavior Survey:

Every two years, school districts across Virginia participate in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) from the Center for Disease Control. Roanoke County Public Schools administers this anonymous survey in collaboration with the Partnership for Community Wellness to students in grades 6-12 in February of even-numbered years. The YRBS is an important tool for understanding health needs, attitudes, and behavioral trends of students and assists us in providing programs to better meet student needs.

Survey questions are focused on topics that could be indicative of behaviors and attitudes that put students at risk. Topics include eating and health habits, safe driving, physical exercise, violent behavior, depression, bullying, self-injury, suicide, drug and alcohol, and technology/social media use. The YRBS for grades 9-12 also includes questions about sexual behaviors. Responses to the YRBS are completely anonymous and in no way linked to individual students. RCPS works with researchers at Virginia Tech to process the anonymous data and produce general statistical information to guide school and community programming for students and parents as well as for research purposes.
