AHERA Report and Management Plans

In October 1986, the United States Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). Under this law, comprehensive regulations were developed to address asbestos problems in public and private elementary and secondary schools. The regulations require schools to inspect for suspect friable and non-friable asbestos-containing building material, develop asbestos management plans that address hazards in school buildings and implement response actions in a timely manner. These regulations assign schools many additional responsibilities. Our program for fulfilling these responsibilities is outlined in your building’s asbestos management plan. This plan contains information on your inspections, re-inspections, response actions and post response actions.

In addition, the asbestos management plan addresses ongoing activities, including, six-month periodic surveillance activities, and ongoing training of custodial personnel that is planned or in progress.
