(MUSIC)
Hello, I’m Ken Nicely, superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. I want to welcome you to this online graduation for Northside High School. We all wish we were celebrating your success in person, however nothing can take away from the tremendous pride we feel for each and every one of you.
Think of this online edition as part one for graduation.
Later this summer or fall, we hope we can recognize our graduates in-person. Until then, we are going to do the next best thing so that our seniors officially graduate on time. I want to extend my sincere congratulations to each and every one of our graduates.
The class of 2020 has become the most resilient class ever in Roanoke County Public Schools and I’m incredibly proud of how all our students have weathered this current pandemic.
I look forward to the day when we will celebrate your success in person.
And now, it’s my pleasure to introduce the Northside High School Class of 2020.
(MUSIC)
Good Afternoon,
Dr. Nicely, Mr. Breeding, Mr. Morris, Mrs. McCracken, members of the board, faculty and staff, friends and family on attendance today. Welcome to the 58th annual Northside High School graduation for the class of 2020. It’s absolutely astonishing to think that our past four years here at the home of the Vikings will soon be over. All of the transitions and challenges throughout our years has only brought us closer together. It’s been a honor to attend NHS and an even greater honor to be surrounded by the class of 2020. We as a class, will cherish the memories and friendships we have formed at NHS for the rest of our lives. It is my hope that we will greet the future with anticipation, never forget our roots or the people who motivated and inspired us throughout our journey. All the support of the Northside community has undeniably prepared every student with life long memories and lessons. Let this be a resonating theme throughout today and through our lives. Once a Viking, always a viking.
Hi, my name is Laurie McCracken and I am an Assistant Principal here at Northside High School. Good day Class of 2020! I will never forget the first time I welcomed you as a class to Northside High School during your 9th grade orientation. It’s hard to believe it has been four years. I know this past month has been difficult for each of you as our country has experienced unprecedented times with COVID-19, but one thing I know after four years of having the opportunity to be one of your principal’s, you are a resilient class that will go on to do great things to impact our world! Congratulations to each of you as you move on to college, career, or the military! Take pride in knowing the diploma you receive today is confirmation that you have the knowledge and skills to accomplish whatever lies ahead! Your Northside family will be cheering you each on! Congratulations Class of 2020!
It is my privilege to recognize young men in the Class of 2020 that have sacrificed and worked hard to achieve what less than 2% of boy scouts achieve due to the demanding requirements of becoming an Eagle Scout. These young men stand out for their leadership and character through the service they have given to their school and communities. They will forever carry the title of Eagle Scout.
As a veteran of the U. S. Coast Guard, it is my extreme honor to recognize the young men and women in the Class of 2020 that will be serving our armed forces! You will be among the less than 1% of Americans that raise their hand to swear an oath to risk your life to protect freedoms. Your selfless act of valor is not taken for granted. As you enter the U. S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or the U. S. Coast Guard, always remember you have a Northside family that is proud of you! I want to take this time to sincerely say thank you, on behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and Northside community, for your dedication, commitment, and willingness to serve our great country! I know that this graduation ceremony is virtual, but please stand proudly wherever you are and know that you are our future heroes!
I’m Chris Morris, assistant principal at Northside High School. Congratulations to you, the 2020 graduating class of Northside High School. I hope you and your families are all safe and well. These are unprecedented times in which we live. I’m sure when you first thought of your graduation, you would never have guessed this is how it would be done. I know you are sad that you can’t participate in a true graduation ceremony and the festivities that go along with it, but never lose sight of the milestone in your life that you have reached. It is a major step in the rest of your life and never forget that.
We are seeing people make a difference in the world on a daily basis. Whether it be first responders, teachers, food service people and other essential personnel. The world is going to be a different place when we all emerge from this social distancing/quarantine life we have been living. My charge to you is to try and make a difference in the world during your lifetime. Honor those who have made a difference in your life, by doing the same for someone else.
I wish all of you the best of luck in your future accomplishments. It has been my pleasure to be part of all your lives. Congratulations and best of luck to you all.
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school.
This year we are honoring one member of the senior class that has displayed perfect attendance.
Jaden Wiley has perfect attendance from Kindergarten - 12th grade.
Hello I’m Tami Amos, Dean of Students at Northside High School.
To the Northside High School class of 2020, I would like to say thank you for the warm welcome into the Viking family this year. Although we did not complete the year together, I am thankful and very appreciative of the time we shared. I appreciate the drive and tenacity I saw in each of you, I appreciate the kind words, hugs, smiles and especially the talks received each day, but most of all I appreciated you!
As you go forth and start another chapter in the book of life, remember….don’t let others define who you are, know that you are important and know that you are more than enough! Life is not a race it is a journey…Live it, Love it, and Embrace it!
Today, class of 2020 I salute you!
Thank you
The senior class has selected three teachers who have influenced them and have made their time here at Northside High School a memorable experience. These teachers have acted as guides to their students helping transform them into the young men and women that we are honoring today. These teachers are unaware of this recognition and each will receive a plaque.
Those teachers are: Mrs. Kristi Fry, Mr. Dale Bayless, and Mr. Brandon Chitwood
Congratulations to each of you on this honor!
I’m Jason Breeding, principal of Northside High School.
Welcome to the Commencement Exercises for Northside High School Class of 2020! On behalf of the faculty and staff of Northside High School, I am honored to stand before this group of young men and women as they prepare to venture into a world that is facing unknown challenges but more importantly opportunities. These last few weeks of your senior year have been filled with experiences very, very different than what you ever expected when you began this journey 13 years ago. These young men and women have not traveled alone in this journey, thank you to the parents, grandparents, friends, and family who have guided and provided encouragement, loved and supported you up until this very moment.
This experience has shown me that at any time the life that we live can be changed in an instant due to things which we have no immediate or direct control over. What a humbling moment that can be. I want to focus on that word for just a moment, humble. Its origin comes from the Latin root, humilitas, which means to be brought to a low place. This can be manifested in two ways: 1) by what we do to ourselves, or 2) through circumstances that we experience. We are all sharing in this experience, and how we respond to these circumstances will impact our futures. Humility can allow us to create a better community when we love and care for others more than ourselves. C.S. Lewis stated that “true humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.” Now is a critical time for us to think more of those around us than of ourselves.
Each of you is at your very own crossroads and I encourage you to use this experience to consider what is most important in your lives. What will be your guiding light to help you navigate through the storm? How will you let this experience impact you? How will this experience shape your outlook on life? I encourage you to be humble in what you do, to build a better community, a better world for us all. Think about who and what is most important to you. Think about how not having those people or things would shape your life, and then do all that you can to prevent that loss. Enjoy this season of your life, slow down, take the scenic route, have that conversation, take that trip when you can, spend the time with your friends and family wisely, and hug those loved ones a little longer.
In closing, I leave you with some food for thought with a poem from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here. This is to have succeeded.
To the Senior Class of 2020, I wish you nothing, but a life filled with joy and success!
At this time, I would like to introduce Roge Lopez. Roge was selected as a speaker by his class. Roge will be attending Roanoke College in the fall.
Good Afternoon Ladies, and gentleman, family, faculty and my fellow classmates of the class 2020.
Well, we did it! We all accomplished one of the major early milestones of our lives. We began our senior year with optimism. We scheduled our high school classes for the last time. Some of us began touring colleges. Others began to look for careers after graduation. We dressed up silly for Homecoming week such as mathletes vs Athletes, soccer mom vs grill dad, tacky tourist day, and color war. We marched and shouted for the last time in our Homecoming parade. Many of us took advantage of the last formal dance of our high school career at Homecoming; although we did not know it then. As the days went by we all planned to make the class of 2020 to be remembered forever by planning the best senior prank. We all came up with great ideas but the best one was from Mr. Chitwood; the one where we would bring animal to school. We knew that our senior prank would have affected the lower classmates, but we really didn’t care. But in reality, we were the affected ones. Thanks to the Covid19 we will be the only class to be remembered for the rest of the history. This pandemic has brought us good and bad things.
Let’s begin with the bad things first, as being in the last quarter of this year; I was so excited to dissect a rabbit. As hard and complicated anatomy sound, it was the class I most had fun and miss. Even though Ms. Collier test was the most stressful one I had this year, is the test I most miss. As we were excited for the biggest event of the year that would have been Prom. As a senior, we were looking forward to this event because it was the last dance all together. But that was not it. We were exited for senior breakfast, senior day, and senior walk where we all would have been honored for our achievement. But we did not get to experience those things. Last but not least I was excited for the Ice cream social for getting A B honor roll. (Mr. Breeding I’m still waiting)
As much as I hate to admit this, Covid 19 did have some good elements. Our family got to spend more time together, we had to tap into our creativity more, if this Pandemic did nothing else, it taught to be a little but more thankful...a little bit more appreciative... and a little bit more grateful for friends. Class of 2020 may you always have happiness to keep you smiling, Trials to keep you strong, Success to keep you confident, Faith to keep you going, and belief each day is a gift.
Graduation marks the end of yet another extraordinary chapter in our lives. With this chapter closed, I am certain that many of us are already anxious about starting the next one because, unlike an English book, we cannot skip through the pages of life to see how long the next chapter is going to be. We all have our own book of life that has not yet been fully written. As this chapter is ending I want to thanks some individual for guiding me in the right path. First let me start saying Thanks to God for this opportunity and for being by my side all way through. Second, my beautiful mother who has took the role of being an only parent who has worked day and night for her kids. Mom I love you! Third, want to thank the career center and guidance counselor because after all they were my motivation to be in school every day. Last, I want to thank every single faculty for helping me every single day by pushing me to be a better person.
What some may have considered to be the climax of our life so far has become an interesting plot twist. But that is what makes life so enjoyable: the unexpected. We will continue to face unexpected challenges, such as we have faced this year. But we will be better for it. Life is more exciting when you never know what’s going to happen next. Believe it or not, we will continue to experience many plot twists in our life stories. Remember this resilience and strength you have shown. You have endured one of the most challenging times in history while accomplishing one of the greatest challenges of your life. Never forget these words “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29;11
Once A Viking Always a Viking!
Thank You
This year we have 4 distinguished and impressive valedictorians for the class of 2020. Dylan Tran is dedicated and shows us that you don’t have to be in the spotlight to shine. Reece Derrick is determined & creative when it comes to solving any problem that comes his way. Michael Johnson excels in both his athletics and his academics while presenting excellent character. Semir Mujevic displays the true definition of enthusiasm towards Northside and what it mean to be a Viking. Each of these students pushed beyond the limits of high school and excelled past every expectation. As Dylan, Reece, Michael, and Semir come before you, they’ll be discussing what connections they have made to reach this milestone. I’ll leave you with this inspiring quote “Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities.”
Hello Class of 2020!!! Congratulations!! My name is Semir Mujevic.
When I first heard I was speaking, I decided to do what I’m best at—searching the internet for answers. But when I was halfway through copying MLK’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” I realized I wouldn’t be able to read it in under two minutes.
But on the topic of dreams, as any high school senior OBVIOUSLY does in his free time, and isn’t just saying because he procrastinated writing his speech, I started thinking—what’s my dream for Northside? Sure, we each have our individual dreams—doctor, writer, professional athlete, musician, blah, blah, blah. But as a collective whole, what’s my dream for Northside. Well, for starters, I currently hope everyone’s social distancing and staying six feet apart while watching this livestream. Furthermore, I hope our community stays strong and connected. I’ve never met such a unified and accepting group of students, where people of any social status get along. Any one student can bounce around friend groups. If you need some new music to listen to, the band kids, who just so happened to receive the highest honors at all county, do a KILLER job on the instruments, or you can listen to Avante Pannel’s excellent rapping. If you get a basketball stuck on the rim and are 6’3 BUT STILL CANT JUMP, like me, you can get high fliers like Jordon Wooden or top high jumper Chris Smith to get the ball down for you. If you ever need to keep your ego in check, you can always talk to Tracey Houston and see how she’s not only a Top 80 basketball player in the nation with two state rings in track, but STILL maintains over a 4.0.
I truly love this student body, and I hope we can stay connected and rely on each other for the rest of our lives. I truly couldn’t envision myself spending all 3.75 years of high school with another student body. Congrats, Class of 2020!!!
Hello and welcome fellow graduates of Northside High School’s class of 2020. I’m Michael Johnson.
We finally made it! Through all the homework, tests, practices, games, late nights, we have finally completed our first task of growing up. And as we take this time to recognize the graduates of Northside High School, I am reminded of all the friends we have made these bonds lasting our lifetime, and our family we have created away from home. I’m reminded of our teachers and staff who have helped guide us to this moment. Of Mr. Bishop shedding light on our history as people, and of Mrs. Fry who opened our eyes to the magic of To Kill a Mockingbird. I am also reminded of our coaches who push us to be the best we can be. Of Coach Hunt my coach for 7 years through cross country and track for being an inspiration to me not only as a competitor but as a person, and then of Coach Allen, who lead us to our best and most memorable season of soccer, one better than our team could have asked for. I also ask everyone to thank their families who stick by their sides along the way. The study body who encouraged us and of staff of Northside High School for guiding us here. I also ask that no matter the path you choose, the work force, college, the military, wherever it may be, never forget your roots because we are Viking Strong.
Hello everyone. I’m Reece Derrick and I just want to greet to all the parents, teachers, family, friends and especially the class of 2020 as we unfortunately are forced to gather on this special day around a screen.
I know this graduation isn’t what anyone wanted or asked for, but these unfair circumstances have provided the opportunity for two of our class’ greatest strengths to shine through: resilience and determination. Our class has gone through lots of administrative change, and we thank all of our past and present administrators for all they’ve done to help us succeed… we wouldn’t be here without them, but as a class we’ve had to adapt to changes, some we might not have liked, but we put our heads down and kept moving forward with the same common goal to better ourselves and our fellow classmates for today, tomorrow, and whatever lies ahead. This class doesn’t give up no matter what happens. Covid-19 took so many experiences away from us, but it never took our heart and determination to succeed.
Although our school year was cut off, we had so many great memories from this senior year. We won the powder puff football game despite the absence of Pittsburgh commit Tracey Hueston. We won numerous district championships. Our clubs performed well and provided a community for so many of my fellow students. We had many winners for DECA and indoor track, and it hurts me especially as a spring athlete that so many of my fellow classmates were deprived of their senior season. I know the soon to be graduated class of 2020 is built to succeed in whatever their future holds because despite the trials and failure, pain and loss, hardship and lockdown, we are here today because this Northside class of 2020… Never. Gives. Up.
Hello everyone! I’m Dylan Tran. I hope wherever you are watching this, you’re comfortable, you’re excited, but most importantly, you’re safe. I want to give a massive thank you to the parents, teachers, families, and friends here for tuning in today to congratulate the class of 2020!
I think I can speak for everyone in saying that nobody ever imagined that graduation would be held in the way that it is today. We spent our high school careers working hard, dreaming about the day we’d walk the stage and throw our caps up as Pomp and Circumstance played in the background. If you told me a year ago, heck even a couple months ago, that I’d have to graduate behind a screen, I’d think you were out of your mind. But look where we are now.
I know these are tough and confusing times, regardless of if you’re a student or not. The school that we’ve walked in almost every day for the past 4 years, the smiling faces we’ve all gotten used to seeing. All gone without warning. So much has gone awry that it might seem like the end of the world. I get it, I’ve thought it too. But I can assure every single person here that it will get better. Life goes on.
Life is gonna be full of adversity that you won’t see coming. Students, I know that you’ve been through so many challenges already in lives. You’ve rose above them, and will rise above this one too. As we move into the next chapter of our lives, there will be obstacles that will make everything you’ve been through look like nothing, but I know that we ‘ll rise above those too. We’re Vikings, that’s what we do. I could never have rose above the challenges of my own life without the support of so many around me. To my teachers, my classmates, anyone who has touched my life in any way, thank you. To all my friends, from day ones to new ones, you guys are the best. To ba, me, ong ba ngoai, ong ba oi, and my entire family, cam on, thank you. To everyone watching, thank you, and remember, 6 feet apart.
And now, we are proud to present the valedictorians for the class of 2020.

Seniors, there is one other person who wanted to wish you well as you go off into the real world and as I have learned in my short time here at Northside is that “Once a Viking, Always a Viking!”
Congratulations class of 2020! What a year to be a Viking! Mr. Breeding, NHS administration and staff are all very proud of all you’ve accomplished this year. You are one of the most resilient in the history of all Viking classes. You are going to do great in this world. You’ve been through a lot, but there’s nothing you can’t accomplish, and I wish you much success in all your future endeavors, because you will always, always be great Vikings. Always remember, Once a Viking, Always a Viking.
Thank you Mr. McKee for that message!
Will the Class of 2020 please stand wherever you may be watching this from.
And now, by the authority granted me by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Roanoke County Public Schools, I affirm that you are graduates of the 58th Northside High School graduating class, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities therein bestowed. Please turn your tassels. Congratulations Class of 2020!
Congratulations to all the high school graduates out there. My name is coach Bennett and I’m the head coach at the University of Virginia, and I’m sincerely wishing you the best, whether it’s going on to college or whatever you’re going to do – a job well done to get through high school, and you guys are our future. We need you, and I know the future’s bright, so again, I wish you the best, and congratulations on this impressive accomplishment.
Congratulations Northside class of 2020! You’ve worked hard to achieve your goals. Chased your dreams with effort, passion and hard work. In the words of country singer Tim McGraw, always stay humble and kind.
Hey Roanoke County grads class of 2020, this is Tiki Barber, Cave Spring High School class of 1993. Now it goes without saying that this last semester of your senior year has been anything but ideal, but you persevered and you should be commended for that. It’s not easy missing all your spring activities or doing your homework from your bedroom or kitchen table but let me add my voice to the many who are going to tell you how proud they are. You guys succeeded through something very, very difficult. Congratulations and good luck to all of you in your future endeavors. I know that success will be right around the corner. Be well and stay safe.
