Summer School

2026 Summer High School Session will be held at Northside High School June 8-July 7

REGISTRATION

Registration begins on May 11, 2026, and ends at 12:00pm on May 29, 2026. All online course requests and payments must be received by the May 29 deadline. School counselors will only register students who have submitted an online course request and have submitted payment.

LOCATION and TRANSPORTATION

Summer School will be held at Northside High School. Transportation will be provided from each of the division’s 16 elementary schools then back home at the end of each session. Students can sign up for transportation through the online course request form (use the QR code or link provided in this brochure).

MEALS

Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost for students attending the Northside HS program.

PROGRAM

Students may register for a repeat summer school course only if they have been previously enrolled in the course for its duration.

Students may enroll in two (2) repeat courses and all courses are taken for credit.

All repeat courses are provided through Edgenuity or Canvas, which are both online individualized programs of study, with assistance from certified RCPS teachers.  Students take a pre-assessment to determine the learning standards in which they are deficient. Once they begin the class, students must meet summer school attendance requirements; however, when students demonstrate proficiency in the required standards they will be released with approval from the administration.

GRADE REPORTING

Final grades for summer courses will be mailed in July.

SPECIAL EDUCATION/504

Special Education Services for Extended School Year (ESY) are considered and determined by the IEP team on an annual basis. Attendance at Summer School is elective and not determined by the IEP/504 team.  Specially designed instruction, modifications, and accommodations in a student’s IEP are not provided during summer school.

ATTENDANCE AND CONDUCT

Students must report on the first day they are notified.

A note from a parent/guardian is required on all absences and tardies.  Medical and other appointments should be made outside of school hours. Students may be asked to give up their seat and return at a later date due to persistent tardies and/or absences.

Two (2) violations of discipline, one (1) serious infraction of the Conduct Code, or skipping class may lead to dismissal from summer school with No Refund.  A final grade of "F" will be given.  Students will be governed by the Roanoke County Public Schools Conduct Code.

Due to the nature of the program, personal mobile devices will be placed in a hanging organizer or other specified location in the classroom before the start of each class and may only be accessed during scheduled breaks. Brand new ear buds will be available to all students. Students can use their own ear buds or headphones, if they prefer, but they are only to be used to listen to the online instruction through Edgenuity or Canvas. Parents/guardians who need to get in touch with their child during the school day, can call the summer school office and we will promptly retrieve your child for the call.

Repeat courses will be offered in a block schedule format.

Students taking a repeat course are asked to make a session preference of AM or PM in the online form. All efforts will be made to accommodate preferences, but those who submit both the course request and payment first will have priority. Session preferences are not guaranteed.

COURSE AVAILABILITY
Students not enrolled in Roanoke County Public Schools will be admitted on a space-available basis.  If a course is not offered or not available, students will be notified by June 8.

Schedule for all courses will be determined based on the student registration.

  • All students will be contacted prior to June 9 and informed of the session, date, and time they are to report.  Students who are placed on a waitlist will be called to begin their summer school course once a seat becomes available. Seats are based on the number of site licenses available to the division.  Notification will go out using our division alert system, so please make sure your contact information is correct, and any changes have been communicated to your child’s school.
