Summer Camps at BCAT

  • The Burton Center for Arts & Technology hosts several summer camps for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders to explore interests in different programs offered at BCAT.  Camps run from 9 a.m. to Noon each day (Monday - Thursday).  Afternoon sessions run from 1 - 4 p.m.  Each program is limited to twenty (20) students on a first-come, first-served basis.  Transportation is not provided.  Camps are open to all students, not just students in Roanoke County.

     

  • Crime Scene Investigation/Intro to Law Enforcement

    June 11-14 (AM session)

    BCAT

    Instructor: Jason Walls

    Participants will learn the basics of crime scene investigation through a variety of hands on activities and classroom discussion. At the conclusion
    of the week, participants will complete a mock crime scene investigation.

    COST:  $75 per student

  • Mass Communication - Video Production

    Students will explore the steps of television production and work together to film, edit, and produce a program similar to projects done by students in
    the Center for Mass Communication.

  • Performing Arts - A Taste of Broadway

    June 11-14 (AM session)

    Center for Performing Arts

    Students will work in acting, dancing, and singing. The camp will culminate in a talent showcase similar to presentations done by students in the Center for Performing Arts.

    Projects using materials, software, and Lego Mindstorm Robots will give students a chance to explore technology as it used in the Center for Engineering.

  • A Taste of Italy: Culinary Pasta

    Ever want to work with a chef in a real food service kitchen? We will create ravioli, homemade spaghetti, and lasagna noodles along with Chef’s secret pasta sauce. Hands on work and you get your own chef hat.

    COST:  $75 per student

  • Keep Calm and Cluck On

    June 18-20 (AM session)

    Instructor: Chef Baxter

    This camp will pull the creative genius out of you. Campers will fabricate a chicken and create several poultry dishes and work with eggs. Hands on work in a full food service kitchen and a free chef hat to keep.

  • Design-Maker

    June 25-July 5 (AM session)

    BCAT

    Instructor: Shawn Burns

    Students learn about manufacturing from concept to construction. 3D design programs like Autodesk Inventor are covered to introduce additive and subtractive manufacturing. Work with computer software to create parts for 3D printing as well as use CNC mills, and a laser engraver to complete a final project.  This camp will be closed on July 4.

    COST:  $100 per student
