In today’s world, it can often seem like many people are pitted against each other and the loudest voices are all that are sometimes heard. This is especially true of the often-toxic environment of social media where it becomes all too easy to attack others, especially behind the imaginary wall of a keyboard. If that is all we see or take in, we might even be tempted to become a bit cynical or discouraged.
Within this context, I ask for your indulgence to share a story that is abundantly positive and encouraging. It is not a story of perfection; it is not a story of a school system with over 2,000 employees never making a mistake, including me. It is the story, however, of a large group of people who are dedicated to doing their part make real the ideals and aspirations of our C-Change Framework, centered on creating engaging and purposeful learning experiences within a safe and welcoming school and classroom environment. When we all work together to partner with students and families, and we share this common goal, it becomes a powerfully positive story.
For the past several years, Roanoke County Public Schools has started the new school year by bringing together the teachers and principals of all 27 schools under one roof for an opening convocation. With everyone spread out geographically among so many schools, our convocation is one tangible way for all of these employees to come together and feel part of the larger team. This year’s theme was about teamwork and kindness and, as a follow up, we have invited staff members throughout the year to give “shout outs” to fellow employees who demonstrate exceptional teamwork, acts of kindness, golden attitudes, or other ways of making a difference. It has been a joy to see the large response from teachers, principals, and staff who have been eager to lift up a colleague and recognize them for the great work they do!
We try very hard to recognize our students for their accomplishments, and we are, of course, so proud of all our students. We also have a number of teachers and staff who win special awards for extraordinary work. The teamwork and kindness nominations mentioned here fall more into the category of everyday people making a difference every day. With each “shout out”, a short description is included to explain why the employee should be recognized. Here are some excerpts:
“Daniel is a fantastic technician! He easy to work with, is a wealth of knowledge, and is always willing to help!”
“Suzanne is an incredible asset to our school community…Even on the most challenging days, her positive attitude and willingness to help others make a difference and inspire those around her.”
“Lindsay is an amazing teammate who always goes above and beyond for both her students and the people she works with. She makes learning fun and engaging for her students, and she’s always willing to help out whenever someone needs it.”
“Tammy is truly one of a kind, she jumps in to help wherever she is needed, if thats helping students with academics, creating behavior incentives for kids, or doing projects around the school.” 'Tamara exemplifies Outstanding Teamwork every day. She welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the school family from day one.”
“Ruby is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for her students. She works tirelessly to make them feel welcome, capable, and motivated.” “In all the years I have been fortunate enough to have worked with Jessica, there isn't a day that she hasn't shown joyfulness, compassion and a kind heart to all who crossed her path within the workday.”
“Amanda consistently goes the extra mile to prepare engaging and effective reading lessons each week. She collaborates with her teammates throughout the entire process, ensuring everyone is included and supported.” “Lauren is an inspirational teacher and person. She works hard to communicate to parents, colleagues, and students in a professional, yet compassionate tone.”

“David is a true difference maker at our school. He works hard to get to know students and builds strong, trusting relationships with them, encouraging students to become the best they can be.” “Eric is such an awesome team player. “Stephanie leads with a calm and compassionate presence that creates a supportive and steady environment for both staff and students.” “Megan has the ability to engage her preschool class effectively, actively and with kindness. She is always looking for new and innovative ways to help her students learn.”
“Jessica has had a great impact on our school from the moment she stepped into the door. She is such a ray of positivity in our building and is the ultimate teammate to all staff.”
I share some of these comments to celebrate and lift up our incredible RCPS staff, but also as a way to encourage our whole community and let you know that there are good people out there doing good things in Roanoke County Public Schools. Be encouraged! |
