Ft. Lewis, HVMS principals selected for VDOE Principal of Distinction Program
Roanoke County Public Schools is proud to announce that Dr. Christopher Benson, principal of Hidden Valley Middle School, and Kim Smith, principal of Fort Lewis Elementary School, have been named to the inaugural class of candidates in the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Principal of Distinction program.
The Principal of Distinction initiative, launched by VDOE in collaboration with the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) and the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP), is designed to honor exemplary school leaders who demonstrate outstanding instructional leadership, positively impact school culture, and foster academic success for all students. The first class includes just 31 principals statewide.
To be considered, candidates must have at least five years of experience as a building-level administrator and be endorsed by their division superintendent. Selected principals will engage in a professional development symposium in fall 2025 and complete a capstone project demonstrating school-level impact. Upon completion, participants will receive the Level II Principal of Distinction endorsement in administration and supervision preK-12.
Dr. Benson and Ms. Smith exemplify the qualities recognized by this distinction. Both leaders have consistently advanced student outcomes and created supportive learning environments in their schools. Their selection reflects the commitment of Roanoke County educators to excellence in education and leadership.
“We are extremely proud of Dr. Benson and Ms. Smith,” said Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. “This recognition is a testament to their dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to student success.”
The Principal of Distinction will be featured in upcoming VDOE publications and honored during a formal recognition later this year.
