Partners for Safe Teen Driving meetings set for September and October

Roanoke County Public Schools will host a series of Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentations this fall for students enrolled in Driver Education through Health and Physical Education 10 and their parents or guardians.

Student attendance at one of the presentations is required by Virginia law, while parent attendance is strongly encouraged. The programs are designed to bring together students, parents, schools, law enforcement and community resources to promote safe and responsible driving.

Research shows that parents have a significant influence on teen driving behaviors. The Partners for Safe Teen Driving program provides families with information and resources to help teens develop safe driving habits and understand the responsibilities that come with earning a driver's license.

Each approximately 90-minute presentation will address:

• The unique characteristics and risks of teen drivers
• The important role parents play in the teen driving experience
• An overview of the Driver Education program
• Virginia teen traffic laws and graduated licensing restrictions
• Insurance considerations for teen drivers
• A parent's perspective following a teen crash

All presentations begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the following locations:

• Sept. 28 — Hidden Valley High School
• Oct. 7 — Northside High School
• Oct. 14 — William Byrd High School
• Oct. 21 — Glenvar High School
• Oct. 27 — Cave Spring High School

Students may attend any one of the five presentations. Families are encouraged to attend the presentation at their child's school when possible, but students may attend at another high school if necessary.

Under Virginia law (Code of Virginia § 22.1-205), students must attend a Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation as part of the driver education requirements. Students who do not attend will not be eligible to receive a DEC-1 card or participate in behind-the-wheel training, which is required for eligibility to obtain a driver's license.

The Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentations are open to the public, with a particular focus on parents and students participating in Driver Education during the 2026-27 school year.
