I was visiting a high school class recently in which the teacher had introduced the lesson by asking students to share stories about gifts they remember receiving. Since I was visiting the class, the teacher and students invited me to participate. I did not immediately recall a story about any particular gift I had received, but I did tell the class about growing up in a world without online shopping.
Those were simpler times, of course, but I told them how much I looked forward every year to the arrival of the Sears catalog. The catalog represented a world beyond my imagination of all the possibilities that existed and, even though I was aware that the Santa that visited my house had a very limited budget, it was still a lot of fun writing down a few page numbers from the catalog, hoping that at least one or two of items on my list might find themselves under our tree.
Both Sears and its famous catalog have long disappeared, but the sense of wonderment and anticipation of possibilities that the catalog inspired remind me of the excitement about learning and discovery that we aim to inspire in our classrooms and schools. Often what students learn in our schools seems very familiar to them and builds on previously learned knowledge and skills. Sometimes, though, students encounter the kind of “ah ha” moment that truly opens their eyes to new discoveries or understanding of how information is connected. Those moments do not happen by chance or accident, but rather through the thoughtful and careful planning and heard work of our teachers and staff.
In this newsletter edition, you will find a Focus on Instruction link to some highlights from each school, giving a glimpse into the kinds of learning activities in which our students are engaged. Please take a moment to click on the link and celebrate with us.
During this season of giving, I am so grateful for the teachers and staff that provide the gift of learning, the students that show up every day ready to learn and grow, and the families that support our schools and students. Our schools in Roanoke County are full of wonderful people that make the season bright.
