Roanoke County Public Schools does not collect unnecessary personal information by means of its website, and collects only appropriate personal information to the extent necessary to serve its constituents and the community.
 
SOCIAL MEDIA COMMENTS POLICY
The purpose of the RCPS social media sites are to share photos and information of public interest in Roanoke County Public Schools (RCPS) with our students, staff, parents and the community. These sites are moderated online discussion sites and not public forums.
Please note if you post a comment, RCPS reserves the right to delete submissions that contain vulgar language, personal attacks of any kind, or offensive comments that target or disparage any ethnic, racial, or religious group. Further, RCPS also reserves the right to delete comments that: (i) are spam or include links to other sites; (ii) are clearly off topic; (iii) advocate illegal activity; (iv) promote or oppose particular services, products, or political organizations and candidates; or (v) infringe on copyrights or trademarks.

FERPA NOTIFICATION

Parents and eligible students have the following rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA):

  1. the right to inspect and review the student’s education records and the procedure for exercising this right;
  2. the right to request amendment of the student’s education records that the parent believes to be inaccurate, misleading or in violation of the student’s privacy rights and the procedure for exercising this right;
  3. the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent;
  4. the type of information designated as directory information, if any, and the right to opt out of release of directory information;
  5. that the school division releases records to other institutions that have requested the records and in which the student seeks or intends to enroll or is already enrolled so long as the disclosure is for purposes related to the student’s enrollment or transfer;
  6. the right to opt out of the release of the student’s name, address, and phone number to military recruiters or institutions of higher education that request such information;
  7. a specification of the criteria for determining who constitutes a school official and what constitutes a legitimate educational interest; and
  8. the right to file complaints with the Office of the Chief Privacy Officer in the United States Department of Education concerning the school division’s alleged failure to comply with FERPA.
