Charlie Filer, biology teacher at Glenvar High School, has been named one of the national Hull Award winners by the Garden Club of America.  Named in honor of Elizabeth Abernathy Hull, this $1000 award is presented nationally to educators who work to inspire children under 16 to appreciate the beauty and fragility of our planet.  

“Mr. Filer is well-known in his community for his work on conservation and education.  From his annual trout release project to his ongoing projects utilizing beeswax to harvesting maple syrup, he works to help his students experience and learn about nature from a first-hand perspective,” said Dr. Corie Franklin, principal at Glenvar High School.

“We first met Charlie last year, when he spoke to members of the Mill Mountain Garden Club about the unique programs he stewards at Glenvar.   He’s a passionate and well-spoken professional that's found a way to educate and inspire students on the environment and conservation,” said Vickie Bibee with the Mill Mountain Garden Club, who nominated Filer for the Hull Award.
