AFJROTC program to continue for the coming school year

Students currently participating in the William Byrd High School Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) will be able to continue participating in the program for the coming school year, thanks to a partnership with the Patrick Henry High School AFJROTC.

At the end of May, the Air Force is closing the WBHS AFJROTC due to lower than required participation, despite repeated requests to reconsider.  School leaders reached out to JROTC programs in Roanoke City Public Schools to see if a partnership could be established to allow current Roanoke County students to participate in a Roanoke City program.

Roanoke County students will participate in the PHHS AFJROTC each morning with transportation provided by Roanoke County Public Schools and will return to their base schools each afternoon.

“We greatly appreciate Roanoke City Public Schools and Patrick Henry High School for helping us maintain a program for our cadets,” said Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely.  “We continue to explore our options for the long term,” said Dr. Nicely.
